The Things To Do Guide

Between
the pours.

Museums, hikes, spas, ski hills, escape rooms, hockey games, viewpoints, and everything else the Okanagan does when you're not tasting. Every entry rated four stars or better.

Lake Country Kelowna West Kelowna Peachland Summerland Penticton Naramata Okanagan Falls Oliver Osoyoos

The Okanagan isn't just wine. It's the trail down to the waterfall, the hockey game at Prospera, the axe throwing lane, the desert cultural centre with the pit house, the pyramid winery, the ski hill an hour up the road.

This is the guide to everything between the pours. Same rule as the Nightlife Guide — four stars or better on Google, or it's not here. Some things are seasonal — those are tagged. Some are inside jokes only locals know. All of them are worth a stop on the way to somewhere else.

And when the day is longer than three hours — you know who to call.

Lake Country

Two lakes, one long parkway.

Lake Country is quieter than Kelowna and slower than Vernon. Kalamalka Lake to the north is one of the most photographed lakes in Canada — the water changes colour by the hour depending on the light. Wood Lake sits below it. The Pelmewash Parkway runs between them.

The town is thin on manufactured attractions and rich in what's just outside.

Kelowna

Museums, hikes, hockey, and Big White up the hill.

Kelowna is the valley's cultural hub. Four museums cluster in the downtown Cultural District. Knox Mountain rises above the city with the best free viewpoint in the valley. The Myra Canyon trestles — 18 wooden train bridges on the Kettle Valley Rail Trail — are a full day's ride an hour outside town. And Big White, one of Canada's underrated ski hills, sits an hour up the mountain.

This is the section where the guide starts to feel dense. For good reason.

West Kelowna

Golf courses, parks, and the westside beaches.

West Kelowna is where the golf courses live and where the westside beaches face east into the sunrise. The waterfalls at Bear Creek are the best short hike in the region. Gellatly Nut Farm is a hidden park most people drive past. And Two Eagles is home to Canada's largest patio — which we listed in the Nightlife Guide but earns a return here for the round of golf that comes first.

Peachland

A waterfall, a trail, and a beach walk.

Peachland's whole town is a Beach Avenue promenade — a mile of waterfront with cottonwoods, benches, and a pier. And Pincushion Mountain up the ridge gives the classic sunset view over the lake.

Penticton

Channel float, world-class climbing, and the SS Sicamous.

Penticton is a beach town for adults. The channel float — an inner-tube ride between Okanagan and Skaha lakes — is a rite of passage every July and August. Skaha Bluffs are one of Canada's premier sport-climbing crags. The SS Sicamous sits beached at the north end of town, a 200-foot sternwheeler-turned-museum. And the SOEC brings concerts and Vees junior hockey year-round.
